The Oddone family has grown grapes in the Piedmont region of Italy for over 400 years. That tradition continues in Dry Creek Valley where, nearly 30 years ago, Pier and Barbara Oddone found the perfect place to grow premium wine grapes. In 1998 they planted the family vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon and a field blend of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.
The Cabernet Sauvignon block lies on bench land on the upper east side of the valley. It enjoys a southwest exposure and deep, fast draining soils. Vertical shoot positioning (VSP) on a 6' by 9' grid ensures ample sunlight on the fruit to develop the complex flavors characteristic of the terroir.
The Zinfandel block grows on a southwest-facing hillside above the Cabernet vineyard. VSP trellising on a 6' by 9' grid and hillside growing conditions develop the rich flavors for which Dry Creek Zin is renowned. The vineyard block is a traditional field mix with 5% Petite Sirah.
Oddone Vineyard is sustainably farmed and certified by California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). The Cabernet Sauvignon clones are 8, 337 and 4, all on 110R rootstock on 9+ acres. The block provided grapes to Richard Arrowood of Arrowood Vineyards and Winery until Jackson Family Wines, which has continued to purchase the crop, acquired Arrowood. The Zinfandel is mostly Costamagna heritage clone (Lodi) on 110R rootstock. 5% of the block is Petite Sirah to complement the Zin. The Zinfandel-Petite Sirah vineyard block is approximately 3 acres. It has provided fruit to Mazzocco Vineyards & Winery, Zahtila Vineyards & Winery, Carlisle Winery & Vineyards and currently Truett Hurst. It has won a medal for Zahtila and has been vineyard designated on that label.
